Built over many centuries, the Alhambra is a massive castle with beautiful gardens and extravagant palaces. Some consider it to be one of the 10 wonders of the world; an Islamic attempt to create heaven on earth in Granada, Spain. The Koran states "heaven is a garden with running water". The real life Alhambra, with its perfectly manicured gardens and beautiful flowing fountains, is clearly an attempt to recreate this.
Perched on a hill, the Alhambra stands out from the landscape making it look even more dramatic. Inside the castle, the views looking out over the landscape are equally impressive.
It's Spain's most visited monument and is probably the finest example of Moorish architecture in the whole of Spain. It receives approximately 8000 visitors a day. |
